DescripciónErie Railroad Matt H. Shay 2-8-8-8-2 locomotive.JPG
Postcard photo of the Matt H. Shay, the first of the Erie's three 2-8-8-8-2 triplex locomotives. Built by Baldwin in 1914 and used to help trains up the Susquehanna grade. The locomotive, at the time the world's most powerful, was capable of pulling 450 loaded freight cars or a train that was 4 miles long. The problem with the use of a locomotive with this kind of power was that the freight cars of the era weren't able to withstand it; they also had various mechanical problems while in service. While the these locomotives were initially bought to be used in freight service, they wound up being used as "helper" locomotives within a very short period of time. Baldwin built the last of this type of locomotive in 1916, with only 4 being ordered. One went to the Virginian Railroad and 3 were bought by Erie.

Not mailed or otherwise dated. Since the locomotive was in service until 1927 and was scrapped in 1929, there's a possibility this card may be post 1923, so I am licensing it as pre-1978 to be certain.
The card has no copyright markings on it as can be seen in the links above.
